LATHAM WON'T VOTE TO REDUCE THE DEFICIT

The DCCC asks a rhetorical question: Will Representative Tom Latham Vote to Reduce the Deficit?

Representative Tom Latham will soon have a chance to back up all of his tough talk about the need to reduce the deficit when the House votes on health insurance reform. Latham can either vote for health insurance reform, which will reduce the deficit by more than $1 trillion over 20 years or he can continue protecting the status quo for big insurance companies instead.

“If Representative Tom Latham votes against deficit-cutting health insurance reform after years of tough talk about the need to control runaway deficits and stop borrowing from China, it will be Washington hypocrisy at its finest,” said Ryan Rudominer, National Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Voters will soon know what Representative Latham cares more about, cutting the deficit by more than a trillion dollars over 20 years or protecting big insurance company profits instead.”

Background

· According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, health insurance reform legislation pending in the House will result in $130 billion in deficit reduction over the first 10 years and $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction in the second 10 years. [Politico; 3/18/10]
